BMW 2002 Fuel Delivery: Putting It Back Together ⛽️

I’ve been decently busy sorting out this whole fuel delivery system lately. Let’s break this into two sections: Fuel Tank and Carburetor

Fuel Tank

After cutting out the rusty section of the trunk bed (and deciding to just ‘band-aid’ it for now), I used an angle grinder to smooth the areas and eliminate any remaining surface rust followed by a quick two coats of primer.

I don’t love the band-aid approach, but I plan to tackle a few other rust issues once I get a proper garage, so that list just got a little longer. I’ll still need to find the courage to try my hand at welding once again.

After wrestling with the rope caulk gasket material, I got the tank installed. I didn’t capture photos when I removed the old tank. It took some time to confirm the proper installation/plumbing and fuel sending unit wiring.

Carburetor Rebuild + Sync Link

Last weekend I fully disassembled and cleaned every part of the carburetor. Upon re-assembly, I installed the Sync Link. I’d read some bad reviews of the manufacturing accuracy and/or quality control of the Sync Link kit from Pegasus Racing, but I didn’t share any of those bad experiences. Both throttle valves seated nicely into the barrels and the action is smooth.

The choke assembly was quite a challenge getting back together. It’s a confusing mechanism to begin with. The linkage was filthy, so the reference photos were a bit challenging. I think I got it put back together correctly — we’ll see!
