The speaker grills were in rough shape and were not salvageable. Which is fine, because they’re speaker grills. The wood frames were in fine shape, the fabric was old and filthy and had some holes. I debated keeping the fabric original, because everything else is original. But I just couldn’t do it. I didn’t want brown speaker grills.
I went with a Fender tweed amp inspired fabric from Parts Express. The fabric itself is for a guitar amplifier, so it wasn’t super easy to form to the speaker grill frames. But with some heat, some stables, and some patience, I was able to make it work.
I also opted to use magnets, instead of velcro, to secure the grills to the speaker. The magnets seemed like a better solution and they worked out just fine.
I like how the fabric ended up. It may be blasphemy to some, but I like the contrast. AND it’s easy to revert to original if I ever feel the need.
